What is a RSS reader or news aggregator?

A reader or news aggregator is a programme used to read the news published on a site.

You can read the headlines of IRB Barcelona in any programme that supports standard RSS 1.0, for example:

• FeedReader (MS Windows)
• NewzCrawler (MS Windows)
• RSSOwl (Mac OS X, MS Windows, Linux)
• AmphetaDesk (Mac OS X, MS Windows, Linux)
• HotSheet (Mac OS X, MS Windows, Linux)

The available manuals give instructions, although specific to each program, which can be used to get a general idea of how RSS readers work.

How do they work?

If a website says "Syndicate this site" or an icon like this appears, you can set up the link on that page as a news source in your RSS reader. The link that gives the information is called "feed". On the IRB Barcelona site, this link can be found by clicking on the RSS icon or under "instructions for use" of each channel, where you will find instructions on how to set up your RSS aggregator.
